Substance Abuse

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders defines “Substance Use Disorder” as a clinical condition where an individual persists in using one or more substances despite experiencing adverse effects on their physical, psychological, and emotional well-being. This disorder also profoundly impacts the individual’s relationships and can create turmoil within families, friends and the community as a whole.

The terms “drug addiction” or “substance addiction” typically refer to the misuse of mostly illegal psychoactive substances. It also includes alcohol and tobacco. However, there has been a notable rise in individuals seeking treatment for addiction to prescription pharmaceuticals in recent years. Initially, individuals may start by taking prescribed medications for legitimate physical or mental health reasons. However, they can become ensnared in the cycle of addiction, eventually meeting diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder.
